Assessment of nanomaterials
4 May 2011 - NICNAS has introduced arrangements to ensure that all new industrial nanomaterials (including ingredients used in cosmetics) are assessed pre-market. (RM) A guidance document on requirements for submitting chemicals for assessment is available here
NICNAS cosmetic guidelines updated (4 May 2011)
The cosmetic guidelines were recently updated with changes to Section F "Prohibited or Restricted Cosmetic Chemicals in Australia".
Low THC hemp (cannabis) to be approved in foods? (3 May 2011)
FSANZ has received an application to approve the use of Cannabis sativa with low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, in both seed and seed oil, as a food.

Food recalls: Woolworths Almond Kernels and Haldirams Gulab Jamuns (3 May 2011)
Woolworths almond kernels 750 g were recalled due to presence or possible presence of Salmonella, and Haldirams Gulab Jamuns was recalled due to presence of an undeclared allergen (wheat/gluten not listed on the label)

Genetically modified soybeans containing an alternative source of omega-3 fatty acids (3 May 2011)
An application has been received seeking permission for food derived from soybean genetically modified to contain stearidonic acid (SDA), an alternate source of omega-3 fatty acid.
